Afghan hound Temperament
The Afghan hound temperament is a majestic and distinct looking dog breed and cannot be confused with another breed of dogs. The height of the Afghan hound is between twenty-four and twenty-nine inches. In addition, the weight of the hound ranges between forty-four to fifty-nine pounds. These hounds have facial hair similar to the Manchu mustache and their hair resembles a black facemask.
Although, the Afghan hounds integrate nicely in a homely environment and the family members, these dogs may seem snobbish and aloof. Moreover, the dogs are friendly and compatible to other pets around the home but go on a long chase when they see other animals outside the house. The primary reason for this is that the Afghan hounds were originally bred for hunting. Therefore, this trait tends to emerge when the dogs are left loose in the open surroundings.
These types of hounds are intelligent creatures; however, they may often ignore the commands. This is especially true when the commanding person is not the original trainer. This is because the dog views this situation as a case when there is no reason to follow the command. Therefore, the Afghan hounds are compared to cats due to this specific behavioral trait. Often, when the hounds are bound, they tend to become aggressive, which may lead them to destructive and vandalism actions.
Afghan hounds are dignified animals, but are lively and clownish when in a playful mood. Nonetheless, these dogs portray a stronger dominance over other males. However, the hounds are sweet, affectionate, and loyal to their masters. This type of a breed dog is sharp, and friendly towards older children. Moreover, these animals have an air of elegance and are devoted to their owners. The Afghan hounds require a large amount of social interaction, but also tend to be very shy when in company of strangers.
The dog breed is famous for having problem solving skills and is relatively slow in becoming obedient to commands. Being sensitive animals, these dogs require firmness and consistency when undergoing training. Therefore, a strong and dedicated owner is necessary because the hounds are quick learners but are independent and therefore difficult to train.
